To most people, a car is just an item to get people from point a to point b. To work, home, school, etc. But for some people cars are a part of us, they are a part of our personality. Without them, we wouldn’t be who we are now.
Working on cars can be one of the most painstaking, but entertaining moments. Wanting to scream when the wrench slips off that one bolt that has taken you hours to get off, and destroying your knuckles on some part of the car you didn’t even know existed. That happiness that comes when you finally get to start your car after putting on a loud and obnoxious exhaust that will wake up your entire block. Most of all, it makes you happy every time it starts. Now if we weren’t in school, maybe this hobby would make more sense. But we are in high school, working as much as we can to get these parts? Lots of people wonder why, we even wonder why, so I decided to ask a few of the car enthusiast from Oceana, such as Gaven R. and Caleb U.
Gaven drives a 2001 Honda Prelude. He’s been into cars for a long time such as myself. He says that he knew he wanted to modify cars 2 years ago, at a car show in San Jose. This show gave the closest looks into heavily modified cars and greatly peaked our interests. “One of the best things about cars is that no matter what mood you’re in, angry, sad, etc. nothing clears your mind like a good drive” he said, and I couldn’t agree more.
Caleb U drives a 1991 Mazda Miata and a 2008 Scion TC. His TC has stay stock, but his Miata was all about the adventure. About a month into owning the car, the motor blew! Taking it off the road for a long time but he worked hard to buy a new motor and took his time swapping it with the help of the Terra Nova auto shop. “Cars are really about the adventure, yea sometimes the car will piss you off but once you see the light at the end of the tunnel, all the time and money spend is so worth it.”
Cars to us are more than things that just take us places, used for transportation. They are there when no one can be, or when you’re bored. They give you something to work on. And while some people may find it crazy spending so much money on car parts and busting knuckles, nothing beats a fun time modding your car with your friends, going on a drive on the nicest back roads, and simply parking and looking back at your car as you walk away.
