Staying Healthy

Chips. Candy. Ice Cream. Sweet and savory. These are all things we have tried before and enjoy.  They taste amazing but aren’t amazing for your body. Many people indulge in these delights.

For some people, it shows. For others, it doesn’t. This is why many people want to live a healthy lifestyle. According to Harvard Medical School, there are five things that can be done in order to live a healthier life. The first tip is having a healthy diet. Consisting of the daily intake of foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, healthy fats, and omega-3 fatty acids. They recommend staying away from unhealthy foods like red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, trans fat, and sodium.

The second tip is regular physical activity which consists of daily 30 minute moderate to vigorous exercise. Fortunately, this would also help you maintain a safe weight level which is the third tip. A healthy weight level is crucial to staying in a healthy place. You do not want be too skinny or too fat. This ratio is not the same for everyone. The number is determined by your height. You can figure out the accurate number using a Body Mass Index (BMI) chart.

One thing that they stress the most is avoiding smoking. Any type of smoking is bad for you. There is no healthy amount of smoking. The healthy way of living is not smoking at all. It is very crucial to not smoke when trying to be and live healthy.  Alcohol falls relatively close to that category. While drinking a small to moderate amount is not considered unhealthy, it is not recommended.

Sarah Dysquito, senior at Oceana High School, has cut most of the unhealthy habits mentioned, out of her life.

What do you do to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

I eat plant-based foods which means I do not eat meat or dairy. I think meat can be a healthy part of a diet but red meat, I don’t think it is healthy because it has been shown to cause cancer. I think lean meat is okay. I don’t really eat chips.

What do you do to stay fit?

I do a variety of activities. I do boxing, Pilates, swimming, weight lifting, sometimes dancing. It just depends.  I like to vary my activities so I won’t get bored because I found when I was doing just one thing I was getting really bored and my body was adapting to it. I also work out maybe 5 to 6 days a week. It is like my coffee in the morning. I don’t drink coffee but working out is my caffeine.

Are their any other benefits to living a healthy life?

Definitely. When you live a healthy life, you tend to have a higher confidence level because the endorphins you get from exercising and eating well makes you feel so much better… and on top of that when you eat a lot of junk you feel bloated and tired so when you eat whole foods or naturally processed foods you tend to feel less bloated and light on your feet. I think everyone struggles with self confidence regardless.

Why did you decide to live a healthy life?

I started my health and fitness journey in 2013, the end of 7th grade. I did this because I was unhealthy and overweight. I basically ate all the junk food I want and did not exercise ever. I hated sweating. Now, I love sweating. I love eating healthy. I love being in-tune with my body.

Why is it important for everyone to stay healthy?

Health can help prevent disease so the more healthy you are the more you are potentially increasing your longevity. The more time you get to spend with the people you love.

What does being healthy mean to you?

To me it’s knowing your body.  Feeling your best. I guess just feeling the best you can in your body and knowing that you are doing the best you can for your body. Just living your best life.

It is always encouraged by many people to live a healthy and long life. You can achieve this by eating clean as well as staying away from detrimental habits that can affect your life physically and mentally.
