Dear Sex Ed Squad
Is lubricant a health hazard? What is its availability? –
Lubricant has no health risks, but it is important to know what kind of lube to use for what.
Flavored lubes are great for oral sex on a penis or vulva with a barrier (such as a flavored condom or dental dam), but can cause irritation if used directly on the genitals. The sugars in the lube can also cause microscopic tears in the anus or vagina and so should not be used for penetrative sex!
Lube that is water based or silicone based can be used for penetration, however silicone based lubes (which don’t get absorbed or dissipate as quickly as water based lube, so can last longer) should not be used with silicone dildos or sex toys because they will destroy the silicone toy.
Oil based lubes should be avoided because they will break down latex and can cause condoms to break. So your safest overall choice is water based lube! You can find lube at any adult store, or in the condom section of most pharmacies. It is also available at the Daly City Youth Health Center, you just have to ask staff for it when you pick up your “brown bag” of 16 free condoms!
