Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson will report to the Texas Rangers spring training a month from now.  Wilson could very well be the next two-sport star.  He currently plays football, and now is focusing on baseball.  With football season over, Wilson can now attend spring training.  He was drafted by the Rangers in late 2013, as part of the Rule 5 Draft.  Who knew that Wilson could also play baseball, and to think that he just won the Superbowl about 3 weeks ago?

Wilson is one of the few players in the NFL today that have been previously drafted to MLB teams.  Colin Kaepernick and Tom Brady are good examples of this.  Kaepernick was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2009 and Brady was drafted by Montreal Expos in 2003.  Wilson was actually drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2010, and played as a second baseman in the 2010 and 2011 season for the Colorado Rockies.  During that time, Wilson was still in college, attending North Carolina State University.

It has been reported that the club wants to be “respectful” of Wilson’s schedule and give him some time to get settled in after winning Superbowl XLVIII.  In an article posted by ESPN, many Rangers players have shared their thoughts on Wilson coming to spring training this year.  Rangers general manager, Jon Daniels said in an interview, “It would be fun to see him out there at second base next to shortstop Elvis Andrus.  Just having him around our guys and our guys being able to pick his brain and see his preparation and what it takes to reach that level would be impactful.”

Wilson has said in numerous interviews that he is “honored” to be drafted by the Texas Rangers and he looks forward to attending spring training in the coming weeks.
