The holiday season is here and it is time to give back to those who are in need. If you have extra money you do not need, even the smallest amount can make a difference and donating money to charity can be very helpful to support a good cause. There are steps that need to be taken when donating money, because not all charities are actually supporting their cause with the donations they receive, so it is important to be careful and do research.
1. Find out what you are interested in supporting. There are many major problems in this world, and for each problem there are charities that work to solve these problems. There are also charities that help in education, religion, environment, and a variety of other causes. Make a list of all these charities that support your cause. Write down all of the charities or organizations you are interested in.
2. Research each charity you are interested in donating. It is important to research each one because they will be receiving your money and you need to know how effective they are at supporting their good cause. You need to go on the internet and search the charity name to find out what their mission statement is, specifically what they do to support their cause, and what kind of previous work they have done. It is also important to research exactly what percentage of their donations actually goes to supporting their cause. For example, The Kids Wish Network says they are working to help the families of dying children, and out of the $127.8 million in donations they received, only 2.5% was directly spent supporting their cause. This shows how important it is to do research on the charity before making any donations. A good charity to donate to would be one that uses 70% or higher of their donations they receive to directly support their cause.
3. Making the donation. When making the donation, check if the website uses encryption to protect your financial information like your credit card or back account numbers. Read their privacy policies to check exactly what they can use your donations for. After you have made the donation you can get a receipt to document it and for tax reasons.
4. Money is not the only thing that can be donated. Charities can accept many things other than money, so if you do not have any extra money laying around you can donate food, clothing, toys and other belongings that are in usable condition which you do not need anymore. You can check if the charity accepts these types of donations by asking them or going to their website to see what kinds of donations they accept and what you can do to help.
