New Artist: Jhene Aiko

Jhene Aiko Efuru Chilombo, also known as Jhene Aiko, is an American singer-songwriter and recording artist who was born and raised in Los Angeles. She grew up with two older sisters who are also singers as well. Aiko is mixed race, her mother is Japanese, Spanish, and Dominican and her father is African American, Yaqui, Choctaw, Cherokee, Navajo and German Jewish. In the early 2000s, Aiko began her musical career when she was signed to Epic and she featured several tracks for the R&B group B2K and other artists. She also appeared in music videos with R&B singer O’Ryan in his video for “Take It Slow.” At age 15, Aiko released a video for her single NO L.O.V.E., which appeared on BET’s 106 & Park. Shortly after, Aiko decided to split from her record label Epic due to problems with her album not ever being released. She then started to focus more on school. In 2007, she returned to making music, but became pregnant by the R&B singer O’Ryan  and gave birth to her daughter on November 19, 2008. In 2011 Aiko released a mixtape called “Sailing Soul(s)” with songs that she wrote herself. She also began working on music with other artists like Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul. In 2013, she was featured in the song “Beware” by Hip-hop artist Big Sean which reached number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. She also released her EP called  “Sail Out” on November 12, 2013.
