Dear Straightedge,

Dear Annie,

So some of my friends are into doing drugs and drinking and they always try to get me to do it but I just feel really uncomfortable doing it. They always make fun of me for not doing it and call me names and it is just annoying. They always invite me to do it with them, but I always just say I have other stuff to do, but “maybe next time.” I really like my friends and I have fun with them, but I just don’t want to do that stuff with them. How do I overcome this peer pressure that they keep doing to me so they can stop bugging me about doing it?

Dear Straightedge,

If they are your true friends, then they would understand that you don’t want to do that kind of stuff. I know it might be hard, but maybe the next time they bring it up, just say “I don’t do that, I don’t like it. Please stop asking me to do it.” I know it might sound really weird and that they’ll just make fun of you even more, but if they are your true friends, they should respect you for your decisions of what you think is right and wrong. Doing this will let yourself feel more comfortable around them because you won’t have to worry about them bugging you to do this. If they keep bugging you or making fun of you for it after the fact, then they aren’t really such great friends and maybe you should move on from them…. But I would definitely just try that from now and then see how it goes from there.
