I know a lot of people have been skeptical of my claims that the Chiefs will win the Super Bowl this year, but I continue to be convinced, week after week, that this is their year. The Chiefs went 2-14 last season and were the joke of the NFL, but this season it has all changed. They are now not only the best team in the NFL, but they are the only undefeated team in the NFL. One of the biggest factors that I believe has contributed to their undefeated record is their phenomenal defense that is full of pro-bowl level players such as, Tamba Hali, Eric Berry, Derrick Johnson and Justin Houston. They have also had great success from their first round pick in 2012, nose tackle Dontari Poe, who has 24 tackles and 4.5 sacks this season.
Defense has definitely been a great contributor, but they would not have made it this far through the season without their quarterback, Alex Smith, who has been a great leader to this team. As a first overall pick in the 2005 draft, Smith was a disappointment and spent his first couple years in the NFL injured. Since then he has bounced back and has become one of the most reliable quarterbacks in the NFL this season. So far through eight games he has 1,795 yards, nine touchdowns and only four interceptions. After watching Smith when he was with the 49ers and now with the Chiefs, I have always been amazed by his ability to use his receivers and his smooth tempo that he uses to drive down the field. These are not exactly the best stats that I have seen for a quarterback, but he is doing something that every other elite quarter back has not been able to do this season, and that is remain undefeated.
Another weapon that the chiefs have utilized this year is their running back, Jamaal Charles. Charles is second in the NFL in rushing yards with 635 yards and he is also third in the NFL in rushing touchdowns with six. Besides being an elite running back with amazing speed and mind-blowing agility, he also contains great receiving skills. he leads his team in receiving yards with 383 yards and has two receiving touchdowns. The Chiefs do not have a quarterback who puts up huge yardage on the score board, nor do they have a team that puts up huge stats and numbers, but what they do have is the ability to utilize the players that they do have and win games, which will surely take them all the way to the Superbowl.
