Famed hip-hop and rapper artist, Onika Tanya Maraj, stage name Nicki Minaj, was born on December 8, 1982 in Saint James Trinidad. Growing up, she faced many struggles, one of which was having to live with a drug addict of a father. Although, having to face all those struggles in her life, Minaj says helped fuel her drive to rise above the life her parents knew. According to True Story, “I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn’t be. I thought, if I’m successful, I can change her life.”

To reach up to that level, Minaj developed her own ‘personas’. Or as fans may know more as her ‘alter ego’. Motivated to be in the music industry early on before her career really took off, Minaj took backup singing roles for NYC rappers. Soon after that she started to cite her own verses. Eventually, she posted her music onto MySpace and was then discovered by Dirty Money CEO, Fendi. The lead to her collaborating with well-known artist and rapper Lil Wayne, who soon signed her to his label, Young Money. Shortly after that, there was a lot of buzz about her and her debut album, “Pink Friday,” which released that fall of year 2010.

As one of the most famous female rap artists now in the music industry, Minaj has touched a nationwide audience with her 2012 Super Bowl appearance, and has become one of the newest cast members of American Idol.

Shortly after, Minaj then released the album “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.” Reaching the top of both pop and rap charts, without breakout singles including “Starships” and “Pound the Alarm”.

In 2013, Minaj released a new version of the entitled record, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded—The Re-Up.” “Freedom” was its first single and it proved enormously popular with her fans. In the same year, she  released her new clothing line called the ‘Nicki Minaj Collection’.

Nicki Minaj was the first female rapper to ever perform at NYC’s Yankee Stadium. She is best known for her outrageous getups, her alter egos and her intense lyrics. Kanye West tells Hot 97 that Young Money’s first lady, Nicki Minaj, has the potential to be one of the greatest female rappers of all time.
