Grimes

Claire Boucher, better known by her stage name Grimes, is a 24-year-old singer-songwriter, visual artist, and music video director from Vancouver, Canada. She began recording experimental music in college, where she became involved with the underground electronic and industrial music scene. Her debut album, Geidi Primes, was released in the beginning of 2010, followed by her second album, Halfaxa in 2011. Her most recent album, Visions was released last year and was said to be “one of the most impressive albums of the year” by The New York Times. “I think I just had a really diverse musical background from a really young age. Because genres are sort of disappearing, people just use bands as reference points. And if I were to describe my sound, I’d just say it’s modern,” she said when asked to describe her music in an interview with Interview Magazine. “Using a couple of vocal pedals, a sampler, a Juno-G keyboard, and GarageBand, Boucher pumps 1980s bubblegum-pop vibes through a series of futuristic filters, topping everything with extraterrestrial vocals” says Pitchfork TV. Her music is one of a kind and creates an entirely new genre of music.

Fifth Harmony is a group of five girls who are currently building a career in the music industry. The members of this group are Lauren Jauregui, Camilla Cabello, Ally Hernandez, Normani Hamilton and Dinah Hanson. These girls were originally solo artists when they auditioned for the singing competition/television show The XFactor  in hopes of winning a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony. The girls of Fifth Harmony were all eliminated from the competition on the last day of Boot Camp but, to their surprise, they were each called back to the stage and made into a girl group of five. The girls made it to the Finals in the Live Shows where they performed with the singer/songwriter Demi Lovato and then came in third place. During the after party, one of the judges, Simon Cowell, told the girls that he wanted to sign them to his label. The girls are currently working on creating an album with Simon and his fellow judge LA Reid. The girls described their upcoming album as “a fun pop album with the likes of Spice Girls and early Destiny’s Child with a fun flavor of radio friendly hits and ballads.” The album will be out soon, so keep an eye out for it.

Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord, a South African alternative hip-hop/rap/rave group has been around since 2008 but has only recently became famous in the United States. The group consists of Ninja, the lead vocalalist, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, and DJ Hi-Tek. Their first album, $O$ was released in 2009 and was made available for free downloads. In 2010, they signed a record deal with Interscope Records and re-released a revised version of $O$ on CD. They also put out two EPs, 5 and Ekstra. Their most recent album, Ten$ion, was released at the beginning of 2012. “Die Antwoord invited me to ring in 2012 in the lair of Zef, the scene the band brought to the world two years ago with a viral music video called ‘Zef Side’. Zef is the nasty, freaky, gleefully trashy underbelly of post-apartheid white South African culture,”  said Eve Fairbanks of The New York Times. They are currently on tour and are scheduled to be in 4 music festivals until June, when they will start their next American tour.

Brooke Candy

Brooke Candy is an up and coming rapper who’s style can be defined as very exotic and outrageous. ‘Brooke Candy’ is the rapper’s birth name. Brooke started rapping when she was randomly told by a friend that she should start. Although the rap game is getting increasing  more competitive, Brooke is becoming very well known throughout the industry. On March 16th, Perez Hilton tweeted a picture of himself with Brooke and Macklemore. Since Hilton and Macklemore are well known celebrities, this shows that Brooke is starting to become more famous herself. She has a few singles out right now such “Das Me” and “Everybody Does”. Brooke’s hard work and dedication is paying off for her.

The music industry is turning out new artists all the time. These four artists are examples of how quickly a person’s life can change and how quickly people enter the industry. With hard work, anything can happen, and Grimes, Fifth Harmony, Die Antwood, and Brooke Candy prove that to be true.
