For sophomore Depak Singh, being a part of the wrestling, tennis, and cross country team isn’t enough. In addition to all these extracurricular sports, he’s also an intern Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

Depak started working at the garden his freshman year when Mr. Orth recommended he check out the garden for community service. In his time with the program, he stated, “[It] has earned me over 70 hours in service.”

“I’ve been there ever since,” Depak said.

On Wednesdays, he works in the garden and on weekends, he goes into the office to give assistance. The program he works with, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, is actually a branch of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is a branch of United States National Park Service.

When asked whether or not he enjoys his work, Depak claimed, “It’s pretty fun once you’ve gotten used to the dirt.”

His internship comes with many perks as well, “When I went to Alcatraz during the summer I had access to the prisoner’s garden and other behind-the-scenes things,” Depak admitted.

This community service has also helped Depak realize that hard work truly does pay off, “We have to treat the frail seedlings with so much care to make sure they’re growing right,” Depak explained. “It’s definitely rewarding.”

Overall, Depak’s work proves that with dedication and hard work, “The end results are always amazing.”
