Oceana’s JV Wrestling Shark Shootout was held on Saturday, January 26 in the gym. 19 teams from all over the area participated in the event which started at 9:00am and ended at 5:00pm.
The tournament had the weigh-ins happen at 8am, where players had to meet their qualifying weight depending on their weight class in order to wrestle. Teams practiced at the mats right after for quick warm ups. Wrestlers went to their assigned mat in the gym and showed their hard work and practice as they wrestled against other schools. They wouldn’t give up until the timer hit zero or they were pinned down. Coaches cheered and guided their wrestlers with directions to winning the match. Coaches and players also demonstrated their good sportsmanship after matches even if it resulted in a loss; winners signed their wrestling sheets and brought them to Mr. Tang who was busy writing the brackets for their next match. Volunteers from Oceana also helped out in the tournament by scoring and helping the referees. After long hours of wrestling the final matches that would decide first, second, and third place were started and wrestlers fought their hardest and showed the true meaning of dedication.
Towards the end of the tournament, the best players were ready to be crowned with their victory medals. The coaches of the first place wrestlers in each weight class were give the honor of handing out the medals to the wrestlers. The top three teams also received team trophies depending on all their wrestler’s results throughout the tournament.
Oceana wrestlers earned their spots in the ceremony as well. Freshman Jose Gazo (113) and Sophomore Dakota Elliott (126) earned second place in each of their weight divisions, taking home silver medals for the Oceana community.
